Monstrous Beauty: A Feminist Revision of Chinoiserie | The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
March 25 – August 17, 2025
Lee Bul’s Monster: Black is now being showcased in Monstrous Beauty: A Feminist Revision of Chinoiserie at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, from March 25 to August 17, 2025.
The exhibition explores how porcelain shaped stereotypes surrounding women, sexuality, and race through a feminist reimagining of European porcelain history while critically examining Europe’s fantasies of the East and its reverberations.
Monster: Black is a headless creature with root-like limbs, transcending the notion of a monster that evokes fear and instead embodies an evolved being that goes beyond the boundaries of social liberation, gender, and the body.
