Bae Young-whan's Anxiety—Seoul 5:30 P.M. (2012/2024) is now being showcased in Every Island is a Mountain, the exhibition celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
Recreated for this exhibition, the work features "a mix of bell sounds recorded at 5:30 P.M. from twelve different temples in the Seoul area, alongside a bell tower abstracted into a white cube . . . The bells of Seoul find a resonant counterpart in the ringing from the church of the Ordine di Malta monastery in Venice, transcending geographic and cultural divides through their shared resonance."
