DAYGLO NATION
2 Nov - 21 Dec 2024 “Dayglo Nation” brings together new and recent work by Katherine Bernhardt, Alex Dodge, and Tyson Reeder, three artists who share an affinity for delineating the shifting, ephemeral surfaces of contemporary American experience. Informal and playful, their visual language of synthetic palettes, swaths of flat colors, and juxtaposition of unlikely formal elements—incorporating the iconography of consumer culture and mass media—mirrors the vibrant, dizzying sensation of American life now while also nimbly engaging with the weighty legacy of modern painting, extending from Pop and Color Field to Fauvism. Adapting the themes and visual language of her oeuvre to this medium for the first time, the artist presents five new series of works on paper created at the STPI Creative Workshop, Singapore, that explore innovative possibilities in screen- and foil printing techniques, as well as the use of such unconventional materials as copper powder and iron filings. These works continue to elaborate on the forms and concepts in her renowned biomorphic sculptures and architectural installations that delve into the contrapuntal interplay between beauty and decay, technology and failure, utopian dreams and historical trauma. BAE YOUNG-WHAN: SO NEAR SO FAR
21 Mar - 4 May 2024 BB&M is pleased to present So Near So Far, a solo exhibition of new work by Bae Young-whan. Recognized for a practice that melds a keen awareness of vernacular beauty to neo-conceptual strategies, Bae is a key figure in the influential, albeit loosely defined, post-minjung generation of Korean artists who emerged in the late 1990s grappling with the legacies of Korea’s turbulent modernity. Often making use of humble, mundane elements (discarded material from construction sites, broken bottles, sentimental song lyrics), his art is attuned to the ephemeral surfaces of lived experience as well as the deeper structures of feeling that underlie Korean society. UNSENTIMENTAL EDUCATION
30 Jan - 9 Mar 2024 Unsentimental Education offers a glimpse into the practices of four contemporary Korean artists, all men in their thirties, who have garnered increasing critical attention in recent years for their work in the mediums of painting and moving image. Putting an oblique spin on “sentimental education,” alluding to the 19th-century Flaubert novel which the author called “the moral history of the men of my generation,” this exhibition sheds light on the sensibilities and aesthetic strategies of an emerging generation negotiating the contours of seismic social and cultural shifts, while traversing the increasingly permeable divide between the real and the virtual, figuration and abstraction, lived experience and symbolic sublimation.
